Growing Local Jobs Through Pijarta Produce

The Pijarta Produce project is a strong example of how locally led agriculture can create real, lasting employment outcomes. Formed through a partnership between the Bidyadanga community and neighbouring Shamrock Gardens, Pijarta Produce was established in response to labour shortages in the Kimberley—and has since become a pathway to sustainable, community-based jobs.

As highlighted by the Australian Government, the project supports permanent, non‑seasonal employment for local people, moving away from short-term or fly‑in labour models. In its early stages alone, Pijarta Produce successfully placed 15 local community members into year‑round work, supported through training, machinery licences and on-the-job skills development.

Importantly, employment through Pijarta is designed to keep people working on Country and close to home, allowing workers to stay connected to family, culture and community. Cultural awareness training and wraparound support further remove barriers to participation, helping local people build confidence and long-term careers in horticulture.

Under the Bidyadanga Fresh Food brand, the project grows produce such as sweet potatoes for the Perth market, with plans to expand into other crops. This not only strengthens regional supply chains but ensures that economic benefits flow back into the Bidyadanga community.

By combining local knowledge, training and investment in people, Pijarta Produce demonstrates how home-grown produce can deliver home-grown jobs, creating meaningful employment and a stronger economic future for the Bidyadanga region.
