About Pijarta Produce
In 2020 when the COVID pandemic lockdowns prevented access to backpacker labour, Angus Galwey, owner of Shamrock Gardens reached out to Bidyadanga community for workforce during harvest. While this arrangement with community members working at the farm had been in place for many years, these circumstances were unique.
Through a collaboration between BACLGI, Western Ag and Kullarri Regional Communities, a workforce from Bidyadanga helped to keep the crops growing and harvested.
By 2021, the relationship between BACLGI and Western Ag had developed to the extent that a company was formed – Pijarta Produce.
In the first season, Pijarta Produce set out to develop a sweet potato crop that would offset the dominance of eastern state growers in the WA market. While the sweet potato crop was not successful, a small pumpkin crop was planted and yielded good results. The following year, this success led to planting of a watermelon crop which was again, very successful.
Pijarta Produce continues to develop and provide high quality fruit and vegetables to the West Australian market.
